Tony sat by the side of the lake, his head in his hands. He sobbed softly, his heart full of misery and regret as he took out a dainty ring.
"I miss you so much, Tessa," he whispered as he stroked the ring. The lake used to be their favourite spot when Tessa was still alive. While he was crying, a bright light suddenly came from the middle of the lake. As he watched in horror, a white figure appeared and approached him. His heart stopped beating for a mere second and he went pale. Tessa stood in front of him, wearing a white gown and her dress had a hole, revealing the stab wound to her stomach. "Tessa?" he whispered as he reached out towards her. His hands met hers and she smiled at him.
"I can only come for a short time. I missed you so," she spoke, sounding the same.
"I should have protected you. I should have died instead," he sobbed as he held her hand, his mind wandering back to the horrible day. He and Tessa were on the way home from dinner when a man stopped them and demanded money. Tessa tried to reason with him and when he saw her gold necklace around her neck, he snatched at it. When she tried to resist, he stabbed her in the stomach and made off with her handbag. Tony was next to her, calling out for help until she finally died in his arms. Since that day, he had lost the will to live and often dreamed about the night, regretting what had happened.
"It wasn't your fault," Tessa whispered as she stroked his cheek, her hand cool against it. She shone radiantly in the moonlight.
"Find another girl, Tony. Don't keep thinking about me. You have a bright future ahead of you," she said she pressed something into his hand. It was her necklace, the one the man had tried to take from her. "Promise that you'll live out your dreams without me," she said and he nodded. Just then, the middle of the lake shone brightly and a gateway to heaven appeared. "I must go," she said and turned to walk away but Tony tried to run after her.
"Please! Let me go with you!" he cried out but as he tried to run after her, his feet just sank into the water. She turned around and looked at him, her green eyes filled with sadness. She walked to him and cupped his face in her hands.
"I will always be in your heart," she whispered and he reached out to stroke her cheek.
"I love you," she whispered before she turned away and approached the gateway. Before she entered, she turned around to look at him for the last time. They stood in silence, Tessa in the middle of the lake and Tony on the bank, his pants soaked with water. They looked at each other and smiled meaningfully.
